Cold Process

We use the cold process method to make our soaps and also a process called super-fatting. This allows us to keep the free oils and naturally occurring glycerine. Thats what makes our soaps so exceptionally moisturising.

To use the shampoo bar just wet your hair thoroughly and rub the bar over your head until you create a nice frothy lather. If your bar is new you might want to use a flannel to help ‘break the seal’. Wash your hair as normal and pat dry before adding conditioner. You can carry on using your normal conditioner or try out our  Lavender + Rose Geranium Hair Conditioner with Organic Broccoli oil.

Because commercial detergent shampoo strips your hair of its natural oils, your scalp has to produce excess oil to compensate. This means that there is often an adjustment period after swapping to a natural shampoo. During this period your hair may feel greasy or heavy, however this should pass after a week or so when your hair has rebalanced its oil production. (This period may take longer if you have chemically treated hair).

There is also the problem of product build up from commercial shampoos and conditioners which often contain waxes, synthetic silicones, and silica that coat your hair, to make it "feel" nice, but leave a residue in your hair. See our Baking Soda solution to help tackle this problem.

If you live in a hard water area you might find the swap to a Shampoo bar a bit harder. Hard water has a high mineral content, but not the sorts of minerals you want in your hair. Often the water has passed through chalk or limestone, which can cause a build-up or residue in your hair.

There are however a couple of things you can try to get your hair feeling luscious faster.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Add 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to a cup of warm water and use this to rinse your hair after shampooing. Some people may need to change the quantities of Apple Cider Vinegar used depending on their needs.

Install a Water Softener.

If you live in a hard water area you might choose to install a reverse osmosis filtration system in your house. This will help prevent the build-up of limescale in your pipes and purify the water that you drink. Of course, it’s also great for your hair and skin.

Baking Soda

Some people suggest adding a teaspoon of baking soda to a pint of warm water and using this to wash your hair. It is said to make the water feel softer, allowing your shampoo bar to produce a better lather.

We do not suggest that you use baking soda and a vinegar rinse at the same time, as these two ingredients will react with one another.

Please always make sure you have rinsed your hair thoroughly after shampooing.

Since our hand-crafted soaps have no chemical preservatives, they deserve a little bit of care to keep them happy and prolong their lives. All of our soaps contain a high percentage of natural glycerine, which is great for your skin as its incredibly moisturising, but it also attracts water. So, it's really important to keep them somewhere dry.

When you're not using your soap it's best to keep them out of water on a well-drained surface, allowing it to dry between uses.  Use a soap dish (wooden dishes with open slats are perfect) or you could even be a bit creative and use a few pebbles from the garden. This will help keep your soap happy so you can keep feeling naturally fresh and fragrant for as long as possible!

This is the first bar shampoo to work well with my hair. So glad to have got through the adjustment period (which never happened with other shampoo bars-i've tried many). Definitely worth the effort. I suspect the cider vinegar is key and the oils are not too over powering. MY HAIR IS SMOOTH, MANAGEABLE, HEALTHY AND SMELLS GREAT. Thank you

So GReat!!! me and my boyfriend absolutely love it. It took my hair adjust a lil longer than his, but my hair only needed apple cider vinegar rinses twice and after that its been great. ALSO, I took my bar with me while going to hairdressers to do some highlights- I wanted to give it a try if it would wash out all the colour and bleach and voila! my hair is colour treated and I have no problems washing with this soap bar. Have to order some more now. Give it a try!!

This shAmpoo soap is absolutely amazing, I am so glad i found it! It foams so much more than any other natUral shampoo ive used, and has a Gorgeous smelling lather. My hair feels clean but also nourished - with natural shampoos My hair usually Still feels a bit greasy. But this bar is the perfect balance, it feels so clean but equally has a lovely weight to it, it feels shiny and hydrated. I intend to never use anything else aGain! Seriously impressed and happy ive found it :) I cannot recommend this enough!

Really lovely product which I definitely recommend, makes the whole house smell good and works really well on my hair.

Really horrid. I have thick, greying, colour treated hair. I’ve used this product twice. Both times my hair felt like candy floss afterwards. Despite rinsing in a hot shower for absolutely ages, i was left with a waxy residue on my haIr. On touching my hair, it felt like i had been stroking a dog. My friend bought one too and has had the same experience.

Thank you Kim for taking time to write a review. Sorry to hear that the shampoo bar is not working for you. It does state on the leaflet that there can be a transition period, especially if you have treated hair. You don't mention if you tried the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse which is recommended? Another trick if you live in a hard water area is to add a pinch of baking soda to a pint of warm water. Use this solution to wet hair before shampooing. It can help the shampoo bar lather better and thus rinse out more thoroughly. There are lots of hints and tips on our website. If you still find it is not working for you it is totally fine to use the shampoo bar for your body!

I completely agree with the previous reviewer. This is awful. I have made the mistake of bringing this away for a weekend and now I can’t get the damn stuff out of my hair, or indeed off my skin. My hair is matted, greasy and dry at the same time. This isn’t a question of an adjustment period - this stuff has actively destroyed my hair and actually coated it in a substance that is almost impossible to remove. If I could give it zero stars I would.

Hi Jane I'm sorry to hear you didn't get on with the Shampoo bar, so many of our customers do and often it has to do with whether they have soft or hard water. Please feel free to send us an email if you would like to discuss it further Best wishes Georgia

I first started using this shampoo bar about a year ago. I have grey fly away hair. I must admit that it took a while to get used to and I had to use the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse but after a month os so my hair has never felt better. The static problem I had with my hair has completely reduced and now my hair looks healthy and shiny, I would never go back to using any other shampoo - thank you :)

this left my hair feeling so soft and with shine. it lathered up really nicely in the shower and felt really softening even when applying it to my wet hair. just feels really good, even after just one time. i have used lush shampoos in the past and they always leave my hair feeling stripped, but not with this one. would really recommend! it feels good knowing i`m only using natural ingredients and can still be happy with how my hair looks! thank you!

I have only been using this bar for two days, but already my hair feels so much better. I'm in my 30s and had felt that my hair was starting to 'age' ie. losings its softness. I keep stroking my hair and looking at it in the mirror - it's that good! I've been using lush products for years though, and really like them, but something tempted me to try this and I'm glad I did. Large enough to chop in two and keep one for the travel bag and one for the bathroom. I have also found the trick to keeping them dry between showers is to pop in a small sisal (or something similar) basket and balance it on top of a corner of the shower cubicle! I'm interested to see how I'll feel about it after using it for a month or two, but so far so good.

This is the best shampoo bar I've tried, but it does take a little while to adjust. It smells nice and lathers really well. For the first few washes my hair felt sticky whilst wet and was more greasy than normal on days 2 and 3. After a few washes the sticky feeling turned into a (literally) squeaky clean feeling, which is now lessening. It leaves my hair very soft and smooth, no need for a conditioner.

This is THe first time I've used a shampoo bar and my goodness its amazing , ethically much better , smells amazing ,but my scalp was reacting to brand name shampoos and had become really itchy , not with this , my hair is so soft and healthy looking , I used the cider vinegar rinse the first couple of times but haven't needed it since , I will be buying again

I love this shampoo bar! I have made many attempts at going "no poo" and haven't managed to conquer the transition. I have thick, greying and colour treated hair so I followed the advice that came with the shampoo and pre rinsed with baking soda and rinsed with ACV after shampooing. The results have been wonderful right from the first wash with no "stickiness" and my hair feeling and soft and clean. Thank you for this lovely, natural product. I will certainly be a return customer.

I’d been wanting to try this shaMpoo for so loNg and just decided to bite the bullet and Order a selection of soaps. I used it for the first time today, exPecting that it might leave my hair feEling a bit heavy/greasy. BUT!!! It feels amazing and the shine is sublime! My hair feels healthy and i feel good kNowing im not using another CheMical laden product with plastic packaging. (Even my husband really wanted to try it). Thank you for such an amazing product!

Falling in LOVE with the Shampoo bar from Wild Sage & Co. It's another plastic free product that really works. Also, unlike some competitors, there are zero synthetic ingredients in their recipe - e.g. no silicone, no SLS. And no palm oil! Unbelievably - I was a bit skeptical - my hair feels thicker, healthier, softer. Also, shampoo bars apparently last around 3 x longer than liquid, bottled versions. It's practical magic! Gorgeous range of soaps and other beauty balms too. These are the people creating soul centred, real solutions. Please support them.

I ABSOLUTELY love this shampoo. It's the first time I've tried anything like it and I'm never going back. I didn't need any of the suggested rinses. It Lathers up really well, my hair feels super clean and has much more volume than before (I have long, fine hair so this is a blessing). It also smells lovely and my hair now dries so much quicker than it used To. Totally fine on sensitive skin or for anyone prone to a dry scalp. Would certainly recommend and buy again.

I have been using this for 2 months now and have loved it, it has made my straight hair thicker and I love the smell - on a recent camping trip I had to use regular shampoo as I left the bar behind - my hair went back to being limp and felt slimey in comparison - have ordered 3 bars to make sure i don't run out, really brilliant product, thank you!

I'm loving this shampoo bar. leaves my hair clean, soft and like someone else said, with a nice weight but not weighed down. Not sure I had a "transition period" more like a getting used to how to use it period. My tips would be: brush your hair before you wash it - makes it much easier to brush through after washing, lather lather lather - only time i didn't create enough lather my hair was waxy afterwards, and make sure you rinse really THOROUGHLY. I've got longish blonde highlighted hair and i'm not even needing conditioner anymore, unheard of with shop bought shampoos!!! brilliant natural product. thank you!

I was adamant about buying this as I have very fine hair which gets greasy by the end of the DAY. I used bicarb first and ACV afterwards and my hair felt amazing from the first wash. The second day I only used this SHAMPOO and my hair LOOKEd and felt great. Would definitely recommend this! So happy :)

Love this shampoo bar! Took a while for my hair to adjust, but my hair has gone from being greasy and needing to be washed every day to being clean, shiny, and no longer has to be washed daily. Will be purchasing more fromWild Sage..

I was really EXCITED about Trying this one as it HAS great reviews! I was really happy with the packaging and the Bar HAS such a lovely SMELL! I have tried it several times now using the same method. I did the pre-rinse eVEN though I normally use natural shampoo so shouldn't have residue but I wanted TO get the best out of the SHAMPOo so thought I would do it anyway! Then I used the bar AND then did An apple cider vinegar rinse (stronger than the recommendation as it felt awful with less) as we have some hardness in our water. My hair felt clean. Then Dried my hair and it just looked so greasy that I had to use DRY shampoo to feel like I Could leave the house! As I can't have greasy looking hair at the moment, I have given up with it. I really wanted it to work and might try again when I have some time off where I don't need to leave the house to see if it gets better after a FEW weeks. Otherwise I will just enjoy using it as soap as it smells great!

Thank you Anna for taking time to write a review. Sorry to hear that the shampoo bar is not working for you. As you say it can take a while for your hair to get used to this kind of shampoo, everyone’s hair is different and maybe this is not the shampoo for you but glad you are enjoying it as a body soap :)

This shampoo Bar smells wondeRful and made my fine, greasy hair feels squeaky clean with the first wash. I no longer have to wash my hair every day and it feels thicker. I have even got hubby usiNg it now. Next up, something to replace our shower gel as it seems pointless going natural on our hair but Using ChemicAls on our body!

So impressed with This shampoo bar ! It smells beautiful and so natural . I've been using organic shampoos and conditioners for over 10 years and i have had no adjustment issues whatsoever . I wash my hair every day and i only received it 2 days ago . it is so easy to use and lathers nicely , it massages into the scalp gently . I didn't need any cider vinegar . I use a teny tiny amount of your lovely conditioner just on the ends , and i GENUINELY am so pleased with the result, clean , soft , easy to comb hair . I wish i had found you years ago !

I bought this initially for myself (veering away from plastic bottles) but unfortunately, and to my sadness, my uber-sensitive scalp wasn't too happy (back to plain water it is - i shall try again in the warmer months!). however, i passed the bar onto my mum who ABSOLUTELY adores it! the smell is gorgeous, the lather from such a tiny amount is amazing. this product is superb! i have bought the conditioner and cant wait to see what that is like! i agree with the other comments and cant recommend this enough :-)

I was really nervous about trying a shampoo bar, but this was the first bar i tried and i love it! i wanted to switch to shampoo bars to stop using palm oil and plastic, plus i have allergies to some chemical perfumes. i had no transition problems with the bar; the first time i shampooed it felt like my hair was matted after rinsing and i was worried, but there was no need to panic as my hair was fine. you just need to get used to the fact that your hair feels different when it hasn't been coated in chemicals from an ordinary bottled shampoo. since using this bar i have also stopped using hair styling products most days because i have better texture so my hair styles naturally. I also use the broccoli oil conditioner a few times a week.

I really wanted this shampoo to be my go to unfortunately it just didn't work with the hard water where I Live. My hair was Left waxy and CLUMpy as no matter how long I ran it under hot water it just wouldn't budge. I can't blame the SHampoo But the Suffolk water. It hasn't gone to waste though, I'm using it as a really lovely hand and body soap.

I have been using the shampoo bar for 2 months and I love it. It does not leave my hair greasy or dry. I wash about every 2 - 3 days. I do add a little bit of conditioner (not wild sage, but am looking forward to trying it) once a week as I seem to have a dry scalp. Also because I have short hair (boy cut) I have a feeling that this bar is going to last me a whole year (used about 10g after 2 months)! The bar also smells amazing although sadly the smell does not seem to stick to my hair, but it does leave the bathroom smelling great.
