The Benefits of Apricot Kernel Oil for Skin and Hair

Apricot Kernel oil, otherwise known as Prunus Armeniaca, is extracted from the seeds (kernels) of apricots. It’s name translates to ‘Armenian Plum’ and so is thought to have been named in Armenia, an area to which it is native

Rich in vitamins and nutrients, this versatile oil can be adapted for use in most skin and hair care routines.

Due to its moisturizing, nourishing, protective and rejuvenating properties, apricot kernel oil is an absolute staple in our skin care routines at Wild Sage

The History of Apricot in a nut (kernel) shell

Apricot kernel oil has a long and rich history, dating back to ancient times. And it wasn’t simply used in skin and hair care; the Greeks and Romans used it for medicinal purposes, including treating skin conditions and digestive issues.

While in China it was used in traditional medicine to improve emphysema, asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions.

Despite this, it is still mainly used today in skin and hair treatments - and we’ll take a look at why below

The Benefits of Apricot Kernel oil for your Skin + Hair

Apricot Kernel oil is jam packed with Fatty Acids and Vitamins A + E, all of which do wonders for our skin.

Apricot Kernel oil For Skin

Fatty acids

This oil contains Omega 3 + 6, Linolenic acid, Palmatic Acid and Stearic acid, which have a range of benefits when used in our skin care. They soften the skin without leaving it greasy, and promote moisture retention. With a range of cleansing properties, they’re great for acneic or problem skin. All this makes Apricot oil a light, easily spreadable oil with a comedegenic rating of 2 (meaning it is less likely to clog pores)

Vitamin A

Is the active ingredient in Retinol Creams and serums. It is known to helps stimulate cell regeneration, even skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines, making it an absolute must in any skin care routine

Vitamin E

Is packed with anti-oxidents that help reduce the signs of aging. It works to repair scarred and blemished skin while preventing moisture loss.

Apricot Kernel Oil For Hair

Fatty Acids

help to moisturise hair while promoting thicker, longer hair growth. Their anti inflammatory + anti-bacterial properties promote scalp health and can help prevent or reduce dandruff. Apricot is an emollient and light weight oil, making it perfect for locking in moisture without making the hair feel heavy. This is what makes Apricot Kernel oil perfect for hair serums or for use in scalp massage

Vitamin A + E

In hair care there is little evidence to suggest that to topical application of vitamins A + E have an effect on our hair, however they are a necessary part of our diet to promote healthy and luscious hair. So while this oil is perfect for use on both the skin and hair, you may want to introduce apricots into your diet to get the full benefit!

How and when to use Apricot Kernel Oil in your daily skincare routine

In Skin Care

Add Apricot Kernel oil into your skin care routine either by applying the oil directly to skin after cleansing, and before your daily moisturiser

You can also blend it with a range of other oils to make your own skin serum (Almond and Rosehip are a favourite of ours)

Some people like to add a couple of drops to their daily moisturiser to give it an extra boost

Even add it to a salt blend to make your own face or body scrub - Check out our lip scrub recipe here

In Hair Care

To use Apricot Oil in your hair care you have a range of choices, you can simply add it to the ends of you hair after a shower to tame fly aways.

Apply it from the roots to the ends of hair before a shower, with a scalp massage, to promote a healthy scalp and hair growth. You can do this 20 minutes before your shower or leave it in over night

Blend it with other oils to create a hair serum, this can be tailored to your hairs specific needs
